Built a new box yesterday! Empty Built a new box yesterday!

Post by whyteb0y Tue May 29, 2012 11:48 pm

I got bored yesterday (5/28/12) and decided to put some 3/4 inch particle board I got from my old job to work. It's 33 inches wide, 17 inches hi, and 10 inches deep. Has a 3 inch slot port that's about 7 inches deep, then continues behind the woofer. This is the 1st box like this I've built and only the 2nd box I've EVER built. I don't have any "build" pics of it, just a finished product. Here she is.

It's just under 3.25 cubic feet. With the amp I have (Kicker Impulse 2252xi) it beats nicely

Well, the wood cost me a total of 4.50 (regularly 36 bucks) the woofer was free. It's a JL 12w3 I believe. And why does it hurt to see? Is it that bad?

It doesnt look bad, usually you just are supposed to use birch or mdf for boxes.

It is MDF. It just has this white like laminate stuff on it. They sell the wood at Home Depot, I believe it's for like counter tops. I guess I'm "old school" back in the day, we used to call it particle board.

Oh okay, yea haha particle board is completely different. Laminate always puts a cool touch to it.

Nope, I haven't made any meets. The ones on the west side are going to be difficult to attend, I don't know anyone over there I could crash with, so it'd have to be an over and back in the same day. Which is doable, I'd just rather not, unfortunately.

This sticker pretty much sums up my car...

And yes, that is on my front window. I find it fitting. Twisted Evil

I'd love to attend some NWSPL meets. I used to be big into car audio back in the day, just recently getting back into it. For what that woofer and box is, I think it sounds good. Got me to thinking, I want more bass! I was thinking about getting a Type R 15 or a RE SeX 15. I've seen a couple members on here from Wenatchee, next time I'm down that way I'd like to check out their rides.

I was thinking about doing something with my front and rear doors to add more mid/tweet to my car. I slept on some Q Logic kick panels on Crutchfield, they had grey and tan I believe, the grey ones were like 30 or 40 dollars shipped. I love bass, but I'm more about sound quality.

I'd like to make the IFO meet in Spokane, it's on my birthday, so why not??

I'll keep ya posted. I may be getting a Boston G5 12. If I do, I may put it in this box and sell it and get something bigger.

Plans have changed. I was working on my amp rack yesterday, didn't like how it was going, didn't like how the enclosure fit in my trunk, so, I'm going to get a sheet of MDF and make a new box. I want something narrower so it'll fit between my shock towers. I was thinking 30x14x14 and I'm reading about tuning boxes now (never really needed to tune them before) so I'll get some things figured out and see what I can do. I may just hold off until I can get a bigger sub or more subs. Decisions, decisions!

Got a new sub last night. I traded my old ass Samsung Galaxy S for a Boston Acoustic G5 in a box with a Sony 1000 watt amp. The amp and box will go by the way side. As soon as my JL woofer and box sell, I want to build a new box for the G5 and TRY to do something with my trunk. Working 7 days/76 hours a week makes it hard to do much.

Nice, those G5s have pretty sweet looking baskets. Ever thought about running it inverter in the trunk to show it off?

Let us know if you want help designing a box! Good luck

I haven't really thought about a box yet. I got it last night around 10, took it out of the box and cleaned it up. It's still sitting on my kitchen table. I sat my son next to it, he had his arm on it, looking at it, like, what the hell is that.

I MAY put some plexi on the back of the box to show off the basket/magnet, I'm not 100% sure yet. I'm going to browse some box designs now. But I'll keep you guys in mind for ideas. Thanks.

FML!! I hooked up that G5 last night after work, drove to town as to not disturb the neighbors when catastrophe hit. I had the woofer out of the box, noticed it was wired for 8 ohm, I took the fuse out and put it in so it was running 4 ohm, put it in the box and was listening to it, had the volume at 25, it was beating OK for about 20 seconds and the bass stopped. Wheeled into a gas station where there was light, turned my stereo back on and found the fuses on the amp were blown. 1 of the fuses blew so bad that the plastic came off the fuse and the metal leg things were still in the amp. I didn't adjust any settings on the head unit or amp, this is where it's at with the JL 12 and I turn that up to 30 all the time. I'm not sure if the coils are bad, but I want to get it figured out before I spend the money on a recone kit. I'm not too happy about it.

Try running without a fuse....most of us don't use fuses......

You can check your coils with a dmm but I don't think the fuse should have blown that bad. I think it may be in in your wiring so that's the first place I would look. How did it sound when it was playing?

The wiring is fine. It works great with my JL sub. It sounded good while it was playing, then it just shut off. I was wondering if maybe there was a spot in the speaker wire that was bare, if that was to touch metal, could that cause it? The guy I got it from said when he had it in his car, at 8 ohms it would cause his amp to shut off. His amp is a Sony Xplod 1000 watt amp (haha).

I'll try running it without a fuse, what ohm would that make it? It's a dual 4 ohm woofer. If I can fix this without having to buy a recone kit, I'd love it.

I appreciate the help. The speaker is in great condition, other than causing my fuses to blow. I hooked my JL 12 back up last night, turned the volume to 30 and it played as long as I had it running.

Sold that Xplod amp for 50 dollars, which is what I was into that, the G5 and the box for. I didn't figure I'd lose money. I feel a LITTLE better now.
